Horror story
We rented a 26' truck from U-Haul, one month prior to our scheduled move from New York to Dallas on November 28 2009. I had made all the arrangements with the movers and my husband had made an arrangement to buy a car in Dallas on the day of our arrival. The people who are selling us their car were moving to another state but they've decided to wait for a couple of more days until we arrive so that they can sell their car. On Friday at 5pm (about 15 hours prior to the scheduled delivery time, and right after everything closes) U-Haul gives us a call to say that they don't have a truck for Saturday but we can get it for Sunday. We are moving from an office building and the freight elevators on Sunday are closed unless you make prior arrangements. Friday at 5pm we had no time to make these arrangements and now our move is automatically scheduled for two days later which is the Monday right after Black Friday weekend where it will be impossible to park the truck near the freight entrance because of the volume of delivery trucks on busy Monday mornings.
I have looked at uhaul reviews on the internet and saw that many people posted similar comments. I should have looked at those before. I hope someone else reads this before making their decision with U-Haul.

Bait and switch scam
U-Haul should be prohibited from even using the term "Customer Service." Their customer service reps are arrogant, rude, argumentative, grossly incompetent, unhelpful and, frankly, the dumbest bunch I've ever dealt with. U-Haul has no hiring standards. If there were justice in the world, this company would be out of business.
The customer is always wrong, you appear to be bothering these people by calling, you have to call twice to confirm even the slightest information and you are more likely to be insulted than helped.
Do a favor to those companies that actually care about their customers. Please don't rent from companies like U-Haul.

storage space problem
After Katrina, I stored what I had left in a storage unit at St.Claude Ave. belonging to UHaul storage. I noticed some water damage to a few books and reported it. I had insurance on the unit and did not worry about it. When I came back to move out, as I finally had housing and was no longer moving around. The space now had more water, and insects everywhere. I was told there had been work done on the second floor I was on the first. My insurance policy had been changed without my knowledge, most likely after I reported the first time I noticed slight water damage. My trust has cost me the lost of item I cannot replace and 1300 dollars. Do not trust this company with anything. I feel sure I am the 1st person this has been done to and I won't be the last. I am now dealing with their insurance comp. and they are insisting I never had insurance to begin with, of course they won't release the paperwork my atty. has requested however. I have been better off burning my own property.

Deceptive "Guarantee"
MY husband reserved a dual-axel trailer from u_Haul and we were advised that we would have it on the date, at the ipckup location of our choice (Houston, BC). The day before we were to pick it up, uHaul called and advised that we would have to drive to Prince Rupert to pick up our trailer and that's all there was to it. Rupert being a 750km round trip).
When I pointed out that their guarantee promised that they would have an equaivalent or better vehicle, the CSR at their 800 number, possibly the rudest human on earth next to an ICBC employee, on the phone advised me that they had my trailer and it wasn't their fault thet it was "not quite" at my desired location.
I find their proactices to be unreasonable, the length of the trip to pick up more than unreasonable and I am taking them to Small Claims Court for all costs incurred from the extra travel. including mileage, fuel, distress and delays, etc.
If anyone in Canada wants to join me on this, please e-mail me at GoneSkiing @ uniserve.com and include uHaul Potential Class Action in the title of the mail.

Terrible company
My husband and I were moving to Tucson. We went to Uhaul to have a hitch installed on our Cadillac Sedan De Ville 2004. When the work was done, and we were ready to drive out, we found two of the windows were not working.
We approached the man installing the hitch, he denied he has anything to do with it but one fact is clear, we drove a perfectly good vehicle in and after the installation of the hitch, found two windows not working, unable to be rolled up.
We drove to a carshop and was informed the regulators of both windows were broken. His estimate was $1125.98. We drove back to Uhaul. The manager until then very friendly was hostile and cold. She denied responsibility for it and walked inside, leaving my husband and I to wait in the store. We waited and waited and waited for well over an hour. I knew she wanted us to go away and I was as determined not to go away. One of the employees told us to go to the Cadillac agency in town, they can fixed it less. We left, with me threatening to bring it to the top.
That must change the manager's attitude because she phoned us when we were at the dealership and told us she filed a claim with their insurance company. I was naively and greatly relieved, the insurance will cover the repairs.
I phoned the number given me and was told to go ahead with the repairs, keep the papers and file it with the file number given me. I did that and waited. Nothing. Finally I phoned, and was put to the supervisor who told me our claim has been denied because Uhaul said installing a hitch has nothing to do with broken windows. But the fact remain, we drove a perfectly good vehicle into their shop and drove out with two broken windows which costs us $1189.31 to repair.

Fired Demoted
Well after 3 years as management of U haul inc they decided to pull the rug from under this family .Starts off as a ad that was placed in the company system from time to time i used too check these to see what was open in position wise .Ok well come too find out there was all of a sudden a open at another center close too our location .The Marketing co Prez decided too run this add in the company website .Well in retro speck come to find out it was our location .But advertised for the other location that was closer to us .Meanwhile all the people that worked for the store that was advertised did not say a word too us .Meanwhile we are in a 4 bedroom home with this company not easy too pull out of for one thing .Also the company president did not walk threw with my wife on what was wrong .This is a issue within its self.So there is two things wrong with this picture either he did not like us or he did not want to deal with us .In turn makes too me he did not like us .Since my wife has worked for the company for Years prior to this and another marketing company .She was recommended for the job for the failing managers before .Everything we did was by the policy and following the rules we were doing the job that they hired us for .There was no wrong doing in what we were doing .Trying to reach for help in this company is like pulling knifes across your skin.We have sent many emails too the marketing company president but no response in many of them .So our last and final days were hell on us because not only did he demote my wife but he also took my job away as a assist manager for the location and left me without one .The sad part of it all was that our employee knew about the issues that were wrong and did not have the balls enough too say he should of been the blame in all this .So not only did we get screwed from the company itself but also the employee that kissed ass of the new manager that was hired on while i was there for the last few days .It goes too show do not trust anyone and i mean anyone ! .Not only did we get had but also had no place too go .So here we sit with her family wondering why .What did we do so wrong to have not just a place to rest our heads but to get fucked from a company that we put so much into as a team

general info
People that have made complaints about Uhaul have a right to be upset uhaul will do anything to get ur money, if u own a storage and u owe them, they will charge credit cards, checking accounts and debit cards it has happened to me when I did a friend a favor and paid their storage once, also when u rent a truck from them they also charge u for a piece of paper in the truck I was charged $25 they considered the truck dirty, I had the truck for 5 hour rental I was charged 2 days with the truck for being 15 minutes past due not only that I was charged for gas meanwhile I was given the truck at 1/4 of gas I brought it back at half a tank, then they wanted to charge me almost $408 for someone elses rental they claim someone else returned the truck but it was never checked in, like that was my problem, the customer service there was very rude and intolerable they stand behind their counter and hold a whole conversation about their love lives, and getting married to even talk about sex mind u I have my 4 yr old daughter there! This Uhaul needs a whole new staff, even a new manager I wanted to speak to him and he's rarely there it seems I called the cell number at the door and he hangs up the last time I go to that Uhaul center at Riverdale

Scam Charges
When does a $19.95 van rental for 4 hours and 60 miles ending up costing $140? Last week I rented a van from UHAUL for this great sounding deal, well the devil is in the details or I should say contract. When I called UHAUL to complain about the extra charges the manager told me they were all legitimate and in the contract. Well yes he was absolutely right they were in the contract and I neglected to read it. I also rent cars from Avis all the time and you know what I have never read an Avis contract and I have never been scammed by Avis either.
Here is a run down of all the extra charges they piled on to my great deal.
1. The two day charge even though I only had the van for 4 hours.
- This is the most unbelievable of the charges. When I was renting the van the person working the counter (a teenager with ADD) asked me how long I would be using the van. I said I am not sure probably about 3 hrs so he wrote it down on the contract. What he neglected to tell me is that if you use the vehicle any longer than this documented length of time it counts as a second rental day. So I was double charged for the base Van charge $19.95 x2 and the moving blanket charge $10 x 2.
2. The $25 charge for not folding the moving blankets.
- This was another minor detail the rental counter person neglected to mention. Do you think I or anyone would have folded 10 blankets to avoid a $25 charge? But as the manager told me its in the contract.
3. The $30 fuel surcharge with $2 plus the price of gas to replace missing fuel. Call me ignorant but since in addition to the base charge of $19.95 I was paying 59 cents a mile and the tank wasn't full I assumed I didn't have to re-fuel. Poor assumption on my part, absolutely yes but don't you think they again would have mentioned this small detail at the counter? Well I didn't get billed for these items because I got back in the van and attempted to re-fuel the van to the exact noted level when I picked it up. Have you ever tried to gas up to a specific level other than full? Its not easy as you keep walking back and forth from the gas pump to the fuel gauge and it doesn't respond quickly so guess what you end up over filling the tank. Pretty sweet deal for UHAUL though because they don't reimburse for over filling. That's in the contract too.
Part of the irony of this whole deal was that I probably would have been able to return the van in 3 hrs but because the lighter receptacle was broken I couldn't charge my portable GPS. I got lost and that probably cost me the extra hour and about 25 extra miles. In addition to everything else when I complained about this to the manager but he wasn't really interested. After all this was not in the contract.

Refuel Policy Unfair to the Consumer
The re-fuel policy at UHAUL is a scam. They provided me with a van that didn’t have a full tank of fuel. They did however provide with a graph of the fuel gauge and I was supposed to return it with the same exact amount as I received it. Have you ever tried to refill a fuel tank to an exact mark other than full? Well the fuel gauge needle does not respond quickly and you have to keep walking back and forth from the fuel tank to the fuel gauge and you invariably end up over filling. If you don’t and under fill guess what UHAUL will charge you a $30 surcharge plus $2 plug the price per gallon to refill the tank. But wait they probably reimburse you if you over fill it right? Absolutely not and it’s right in the contract.
How can UHAUL get away with this? Either way the consumer gets ripped off unless you happen to have re-filled to the exact mark when you picked the vehicle up.
If they want you to refill the tank then they should do the same thing as the Car Rental companies do. They rent you vehicles with a full tank of fuel so there is no question about how much fuel you used and how much you replaced.

Bad service
I reserved a truck with a credit card and the day of pick up they didnt' have my truck. No explanation, no apology. They said they would call back and didn't. I tried calling customer service for hours - spoke to 3 people. I hung up on me because she didn't want to deal with me. The other 2 were useless idiots that did nothing but waste my time.
on top of everything they wouldn't take my complaint - said my "order" had to be closed. Now my credit card info is out there in who knows who 's hands!!!
