Rip off
I made the maximum IRA contribution to Metlife for 2007 for my wife and I in early 2007.

Later on that year, I had some excess cash in money market accounts which were generating very little interest, so I decided to make an early IRA contribution for 2008 in October 2007.

I wrote the account numbers and the intended year of contribution on the faces of two separate checks (one $5000. check each for my wife and I).

I filled out the mail-in stub for one check designating the intended year (2008)of contribution, but failed to do so for the second check. Metlife deposited the checks. However, as previously stated I did write the intended contribution year on the memo space on both check faces.

In early 2008 I became aware that I could have sent in another $1000. each for the maximum 2008 contribution, and I did so.

In a November 2009 meeting with the financial advisor who sold me the Metlife policy, we noticed that only $2, 000. had been applied by Metlife to the 2008 IRA accounts, and we then began contacting Metlife to get the discrepancy addressed. Subsequently, several contacts were made with Metlife regarding the issue, and each time I was "blown off" and told that Metlife was not going to do anything about it.

In about April of this year (2010)I received a notice from IRS that only $2000. total had been received for year 2008 and that since I had claimed $12, 000. deduction on the i.t. return, I owed an additional $2, 962.00 taxes, interest, and penalties for 2008.

Several more attempts were made to get Metlife to correct the issue, to no avail. Their bottom line was that 1) I shouldn't have sent the checks in that early because a check sent in 2007 couldn't be applied to the 2008 IRA. 2) My accountant should have caught the error. 3) The memo on the check faces were for my records only 4) One mail in stub was not filled out. 5) Nothing was their fault, period.

When asked to return the $10, 000. which had no legal place to go within the IRAs, Metlife started talking about surrender fees, etc.

Finally, with no resolution to the problem I had to cough up the $3000. additional to the IRS, and my accountant charged me several hundred dollars for his efforts to resolve the issue.

As of this date, August 13, 2010, I still await the return of the $10K from Metlife.

Don't trust this dental insurance
When the interpretation of a MetLife benefit comes into question, Metlife telephone counselor advice "is not authoritative". The plan brochure "is not authoritative". The benefit plan "is not authoritative". Thus the interpretation of a benefit is subjective to a benefits approval board. I wrote several letters to MetLife, appealing a denial of an orthodontic benefit which they claimed was excluded. The exclusion was not clear in any material nor was it understood by the counselor. Thus MetLife repeatedly refused my claim over a period of 11 months. I cannot in good conscious recommend MetLife Federal Dental Insurance to anyone enticed by their orthodontic benefit. It is phoney.

Said my life insurance is going broke
I took out a Metlife life insurance policy in 1995 paying 100 a month for a 200, 000 policy mine and 99 a month for the wifes 100, 000 policy.yes we did borrow 6500 from it awhile back and was told it did not have to be paid back, it would just be deducted from the face amount. Well our original agent left after about 2 years and ever since Metlife would not give us a name of our new agent and even canceled the policy becuase we changed banks for auto pay and they would not except the new bank info.i will be filing a complaint with the indiana insurance commisioner.they suck big time customer service wise.worst part is now they say mine is almost broke and hers is not far behind. we were led to beleive this insurance was for whole life but turns out i feel we were lied to from the start and at the last minute they tell us its almost worthless, so yes i am pissed and feel we deserve a total refund of all payments plus interest minus the amount we borrwed. stay away from metlife.!!

disability insurance
I realize my complaint comes too late for any recourse on my part... but it may prevent someone else from having this problem with Metlife refusing to pay on disability policies. I paid on one of their disability policies thru my work at Naturalizer Shoes for almost 15 years. When i became disabled in 2000 and filed for social security Metlife honored the part of the policy that paid me my normal wages up to the point where i was declared 100% disabled by Social Security. At that point they said i was still able to work and required that i attend a 2 day set of tests 75 miles one way in Altamonte Springs from my home in Daytona Beach. I explained to the company that i had no way of getting there for the tests due to my car not running, and in addition i had just had major surgery from my gall bladder rupturing.and I was under phsyciatric care at the time and in no condition to deal with them. Anyone i talked to with the company seemed not to care. The part of the policy they refused to honor was the section that promised to assure that my monthly income be $1500 per month (example : if social security paid me $1190 every month Metlife would pay $310 so that i would have $1500 total.

Over the last 10 years that would have been close to $25, 000 that would have made my living conditions and personal life much easier. I have read countless reports of them doing the same thing to policy holders all over the country and someone some how needs to put a stop to them not honoring their commitments to people who desperately needed the help

non-payment
I incurred over $8, 000 of dental work of which over 50% was done while my dental insurance was in effect. My company canceled the insurance and MetLife denies my claim even for work that was done while the insurance was in effect. I am planning to take legal action against them.

Overcharging
I have been going to this dentist for the last two years. I have had 3 root canals. Last year I had got approval to get the crowns put in for $500 each but I ended up waiting. This year I had to get a new approval for this year and I got the approval for the three that I needed done. Now the price has went up to $716 per crown. They claim that was what my insurance company requires them to charge but in reality it is the max my insurance company will allow them to charge. I think this is totally unacceptable expecially in these economic times. I have given this particular dentist thousands of dollars worth of business. The crowns that need to be done are all in a row and I was planning to do them all at once which would save the dentist hours worth of work. I am not impressed with the customer service or the business ethics of this dentistry.

Appeal Denial
Everyone that I have talked to at my place of business who has had dealings with Metlife has had problems.

I was off work with what they thought were heart problems but turned out to be my gallbladder. I had surgery and my Dr. did send Metlife the information. After my surgery I came down with pancreatitis and was back in the hospital. While I was in the hospital Metlife called me and told me I had to have all my info in by 5:00 that day. Mind you, I am in the hospital with IV's and pain meds in my system. I explained this to them but they did not care and would not grant me an extension. It was like too bad we need it and I don't care if you are in the hospital.

I had to appeal and they denied my appeal because I have a job where I sit all day and they say I can perform my duties. Even though I have recurring pancreatitis and letters from my Doctor saying it would be detrimental to my health to be working during those times, Metlife just does not care. They say I can be on the phone with a customer for 20 min to an hour and take care of them even though I am throwing up and have diahrrea.

I lost my job because of the denied appeal from Metlife. My place of employment says that because of Metlife's denial that I have over 400 hours of unaccounted time off. They do not care that I have Doctor letters. All they care about is what Metlife says. You can never get the same answer from anyone you talk to at Metlife. Why do we have STD insurance when you cannot use it when you are really ill????

Scammers
Listen everyone, if your company offer MetLife insurance {dental} be careful using it. When it comes to pay, they always find a way to get you stuck with the bills. first my doctor submitted a pre-determination for my surgery, it took about a month before they approved it and I scheduled my appointment to get the work done which is the right way, but before that I called MetLife to confirm my claim, the csr I spoke to told me if I get the work done, I’ll be using my whole maximum {$1000} and $400 will be out of pocket and I said ok. I got the work done, now they will not pay the bill stating that my surgery isn't cover and that they apologized for the mistake and that speaking with a csr is not a guarantee neither recorded, now I’m stuck with $1400.I disputed it, still don't work. I wish and pray that MetLife go to ***!

Difficult company
My mother has an active, current, long term health care policy with Metlife, thorough AARP. This company has been very difficult to work with, although my mother is living in an approved Assisted living facility, we have not received any assistance whatsoever. I hope there is a better long term health care insurance provider than METLIFE.
