Hughes.net Reviews

Slow and unreliable internet connection
Ever since Hughes.Net offered to upgrade my system for a commitment of an additional 15 months on the service contract, the internet connection is very poor and very slow. The so called "Technical Support" consists of people who can barely speak ENGLISH and are of no help whatsoever, and give inconsistent advice.

I have always had trouble with Hughes.Net, but now it's even worse.

Billing errors!
The aggravation of dealing with this corporate giant over correcting "THEIR" billing errors and correctly crediting my account with payments made for service has become an incomprehensible nightmare... that old adage has been proven so true and correct...the bigger the corporation... the greater the incompetency... in their case...the biggest part of their head is in the lower and darker recesses of their anatomy.

Poor customer service!
We had Hughes for about 7 years (started as Direcway). They SUCK! First of all, anytime you have a problem, you get stuck talking to someone in GOD KNOWS WHERE, who doesn't speak English and can not understand what you say! And the FAP, don't get me started. No one could EVER give me an answer about how this is calculated. We would be working away and then all of a sudden, without warning, you basically don't have any internet service, and it STAYS that way for 24 hours. They would show that we had been downloading megga items when our computers were turned off!!! Then they would cut us off for 24 hours, and there was nothing we could do about it. And we had the professional version! We then found out, that we had been paying $10 more per month for a lesser version, that we should have only been paying $79.99 for, but we had been paying $89.99 for years! So we went with Wildblue through AT&T, and so far, so good. But Hughes seems to have a hard time canceling our service. They keep taking the money each month, saying we have to call again to cancel the service. Stay away from these people. They want to take you for every cent, and then the people who don't speak English will write on your file that they "told you this" or "told you that" when they didn't, for the most part, all you get out of these people is "I'm sorry you're having a problem". You can't get any real answers, you can't even get people (including supervisors) that speak the English language well enough to understand you and you understand them. If you want internet service that runs hassle free... DON'T CHOSE HUGHES!

Horrible service
If you have any choice at all, ANY alternative to Hughes.net, take it. They are a truly dismal company. They lie about their download speeds, offer atrocious tech support, blatantly mis-represent the degree to which they limit your usage and all in all are content to take advantage of rural folks that have no alternative to use them. I only hope that some sort of competitor takes advantage of the total absence of good satellite internet and knocks them out of business, though I suspect that they have the FCC on their side and to competition will be allowed to flourish.

They really are an awful company. Be warned before you waste your money.

Everything is bad about hughesnet!
Accept some wisdom. THIS SERVICE IS HORRIBLE. I live in a remote area where there is no other internet service. I have the Pro service after I found out about limited daily downloads. Hughesnet is about half again as fast as dialup. I can't even watch a news video clip without the video buffering every ten seconds. Don't waste you time calling Pakistan for tech support. I did, and could only comprehend about every third word "Rick" was saying. I finally became so frustrated I hung up on him. When the bimbo on the TV ad says "all you need is a clear view of the southern sky" believe her. Cloudy=24kbs, rain=24kbs, fog=24kbs snow=no service. If you make the mistake of subscribing to hughesnet DON'T get the home version of service. If you're online a lot you'll run out of the alloted download ration in no time. I have to upgrade to receive a higher level of download ration.

In conclusion, one has to know without a shadow of a doubt that a company is providing a poor service when there is no place on their website to email them and register complaints. Nowhere!

If anybody reading this knows of a better internet provider for people living away from DSL or cable, please let me know at [email protected]. I would appreciate it. I'll just instruct my credit card company not to accept any more charges from Hughesnet. Let them sue me!

Poor service!
I too purchased Hughes for a mere $495.00 and haven't had a day without poor service. I ran 26 on my dial up and cant get dsl so this was my option. I really hate the poor service and having to talk to someone in India who cant understand me. I had my my service less than a month and have been on the phone with them six times. I was never told until it happened that there was a max you could down load. I am totally frustrated with this service going to have try and get my money back. We will see!

FAP's "fair access policy" is a fraud!
I am so fed up with Hughes.net. First of all I am constantly needing to reboot my modem after a few hours of inactivity. Hughes Net can not fix the problem and told me I would have to live with it. Today I find out that after downloading over 200MB of data in a 24 hour period the fair access policy kicks in and Hughes Net reduces your internet speed to 22k for 24 hours as a penalty for using the system too much. Of course if you agree to pay an additional $20 a month for the PRO connection, they will give you unlimited downloads.

So Fair Access Policy is simply a way for Hughes Net to get you to pay more $$$. It has nothing to do with "Fair Access". Its more like "unfair access" where Hughes Net hooks you into a contract then informs you of new rules limiting your access. Run if you can from Hughes Net, the service SUCKS!

E-mail went down!
May 15, 2007 our e-mail went down. Since then Hughes keeps assuring me that it will be fixed. It is now June 3, 2007 and we still do not have e-mail. Each time I call I am assured that this problem will be fixed in the next 24-48 hours. Perhaps their hours are timed differently from the rest of the world!

Downloading and surfing problems
I started with Direcway and they sold to Hughes.net. Since that time the service has been horrible. I was downloading Microsoft Office and a window came up saying it would take 53HOURS to download it. I called and they told me to download part of it today and the rest tomorrow. I am paying for 24/7 internet and this is much slower than dialup. They told me if i canceled i would have to pay them $300.00 because i upgraded to the 7000 i thought it would help it only got worse. If they want me to pay them $300. they can take it out of what i have overpaid them for this service. How can the possibly get away with this!!!

Is there anything that can be done about this problem??? Advise smb!
