Use of Collection Agency for offered credit
Original Complaint: FairPoint Communications routed unwanted callers to our cell phone and was unable to correctly route our callers. This resulted in us getting dozens of unwanted calls from people that had been incorrectly directed to call our cell phone. For the people that were trying to call us, they received a message indicating that our phone line was not currently in service. We had people wondering if we were having problems paying our phone bill. This cost us considerable amount of time, money (cell phone charges), frustration, and embarrassment. We called FairPoint on numerous occasions and they finally fixed it after several months AND we reported the problem to the Better Business Bureau and FCC. We asked for compensation for our time and expense in this matter. They offered to credit our account $168.56. We refused because it did not come close to what they have cost us. We received letters from the BBB and FCC stating that FairPoint Communications had made a "good faith effort" and "appears to address the issues raised".
New Complaint: FairPoint Communications has sent the remaining $101.00 balance to NCO Financial Systems, Inc., a collection agency. They did not credit our account a single penny for the considerable inconvenience they have given us. They did not give us any warning that this action would be taken. The last communication I received from them indicated that the $101.00 remaining balance was an "optional charge". NCO Financial Systems is threatening to damage our credit rating. After talking to Dottie Nesmith, Regulatory Compliance Manager for FairPoint Communications today, I realized that FairPoint is taking the stance that they offered the credit of $168.56, but we refused it, therefore we still owe it and they did not need to give us any warning to this affect.
Message to all potential FairPoint Communications customers: This company only responds to service requests/complaints if you make an formal complaint to the BBB and/or FCC. If you really want telephone service, then I suggest you look elsewhere. I've been very happy with our cell phone and internet service with other carriers. There are a lot of customer complaints about FairPoint Communications and they confirm that our experience with FairPoint Communications is not unique. Buyer Beware!

customer service
On April 24, 2009 we discontinued our service with Fairpoint Communication and asked that a referral be left directing callers to our cell phone. Simple request, right? Not for FC. They have directed at least five other phone numbers to our cell phone making it nearly impossible to get any work done because we must answer the phone for fear that one caller will actually be correctly directed to us. FC has left referral numbers that are incorrect. This resulted in directing our callers to unknown numbers. The people at Fairpoint Communications can't get it right! After I requested that I be reimbursed for my time when making the dozen plus calls during the last month to correct the problem (and as of today, our callers are still being directed to an incorrect number) as well as the time it took to answer unwanted misdirected callers, I was told the best they could offer was a $20 credit by Amanda in Customer Service who said "I will not deny that mistakes have been made". I wouldn't recommend Fairpoint Communications to anyone. If there is no other land line option, just use your cell phone and save yourself a lot of time, grief, and a bundle of cash each month.

Timly manner
I called Fairpoint on 03-06-09 to have DSL hooked up, They said 1-2 days and I would receive my equip. well it was 1week and 3 days later...I hooked it up and called them of course after HOURS on hold trying to get through...They tell me that they can't get my line ready until 04-06-09 and I would have to wait until then. So I waited until 04-08-09 and called back only to find out they had to send a tech to my house...So tech shows up 04-17-09 and checks the computer and says it will be 1-2 days!!! (always 1-2 days). So I waited until 04-20-09 and call them again...Talked to a supervisor, WHAT DO I DO... I threatened to send their equip. back and cancel the whole thing, His statement to me was "DO WHAT YOU GOT TO DO". Not very professional. So I decided to wait it out a bit longer, So on 04-24-09 I called back again and was told there was a ticket out for my password guess what? Yeah 1-2days! So I wait again...So 05-07-09 I called the tech line and was told 1-2days, So I asked what he wanted me to do with their equip.? Answer? Whatever, Sorry we couldn't help you. CLICK...HUNG UP ON ME. And of course I am getting charged for the service and am disputing the charges...

Flat rate
I have been using Fairpoint Communication's long distance plan and they charged 5cent for domestic and 9cent per a mint to international call.
This month I got the bill of $350 due to they charged $3.25 for the international call and 19 cents for the domestic.
plus, Fairpoint Communication customer service representatives are very lazy to serve their customers and even rude.
I called them to readjust the charge and reissue the bill for me and the answer is no.
I hate Fairpoint Communication plus their websites is not useful.

poor phone service
For the second time in a month our phone service stopped. the second time and current problem was during Christmas. I am at work wondering if my kids are ok cause I cant call to check on them "Theres No Phone Service" if theres an emergency I'll never know bout it. I found a number to call and supposedly the problem is on our end fine... but how am I going to call to touble shoot the problem I HAVE NO SERVICE. Our cell phones dont get reception as of yet so I am wondering how I am going to fix the problem. I never had this problem with Verizon. Fairpoint is not very good at all, do you suppose its because they are a Southern Co.
