Unethical Business Practices
Just an fyi for everyone thinking about a free trial of emusic, either music or audiobooks. Below is a response from eMusic about their "free" trial. If at any point during your trial you click to download something that you don't have credit for you are automatically upgraded and billed for a membership. No confirmation screen (which they mention but was not displayed when I clicked on the audiobook download link), no notification. Their response does a good job showing how little they care about their customers. I had not downloaded the audiobook yet and I wanted them to refund the subscription amount.

________
Please note that the free trial account is for a limited number of downloads and for a limited time period. You are required to download the free tracks within the free trial period, before the account transitions to a paid membership plan. If the total number of free credits are exceeded during the free trial period, the account will automatically transition into a paid membership plan. This information was included in our Terms Of Use and on the confirmation page which appeared when the account was registered.

Unfortunately we are not able to issue you a refund for charges incurred during your membership. Per Section 6 of eMusic’s Terms of Use which you agreed to when you registered for your account, all charges made during the subscription period are nonrefundable.

Rude company
So I went to Staples to get some supplies and I stopped by the gift card rack. I wanted an ITunes card but I really didn't want to pay $0.99 a song. But I saw this gift card for Emusic $15 and you get 30 song I read the back and it was the real deal so I went ahead and bought it.

Then when I got home I got on my laptop and proceeded to their website to look at the music they had. I was in for a rude surprise! The music wasn't sung by the real artists but by Individual artists! I was very angry. I then proceeded in calling Staples Customer Care. They said to call the store manager and she said she couldn't do anything and to call Emusic directly.

When I had called them after searching for a half an hour on their website for a phone number I was on hold for over 20 minutes. When I finally got on the phone with someone I was greeted by a "WHAT DO YOU WANT". There was their first mistake. At that point I was ticked off from that greeting but I bit my tongue and continued. I explained the problem and see said "NO REFUNDS". After I had told her (Who did not speak good English) That I did not know it would be by individual artists and not the real ones see then said "YOU SHOULD DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE YOU BUY". We then hung up.

I then filed a report with the BBB of Greater New York. I then called them back and got no where with that I filed a report with the FTC too. After many more phone calls I finally called Staples Corporate and told the secretary of the CEO of staples the situation and she sent me a $15 certificate that could be used at any Staples store.

I will never even think of dealing with Emusic again. They are crooks and should not be trusted.

A NOTE: I had looked this up online and many people were in the same position as I was but some who signed up for the free trial for Emusic were having unauthorized charges on their Credit Card by Emusic ex. $110.97, 52.32, 22.45. my suggestion is not to deal with them at all. Stay away form Emusic!

unauthorized billing
This company has continued to bill me for emusic($9.99) and ebooks($11.99) after a trial period that I cancelled. This has been going on for several months and they had refused until June 13, 2010 to allow me to cancel. They informed me that they would not refund my money and could see where I had only tried the service and then never used it again! Please help me and help protect other people from this company.

Thank you

Rip off
I downloaded music from their site and when I went to put them on my ipod it would say path not found. I also tried burning them to a cd and got the same message, when I contacted the website I was basicly told sorry, they couldn't do anything. I wasted 40 bucks on music I can't even listen to on my computer. If you are thinking about using them...don't.

impossible to cancell account
Emusic directs you to www.emusic.com/account/cancel.html. whereas it's impossible to cancell the account. It reports back to you
that due to problems/upgrading they cannot execute this request.

But it's not possible at all;have tried it many times. Now I have to contact my bank to stop renewal charges of $99.00 .Emusic is a scam and should be avoided anytime. Don't get inot their free trial
subscription.
They are a rip off and their music is very old.

"free" downloads
Here are the facts about this bottom-feeding rip-off of a company.
1. Their ads for "free" downloads are as ubiquitous as Tiger Woods mistresses
2. They DELIBERATELY make their downloads user unfriendly (even their loyal followers admit this)
3. They do #2 (no pun intended) for the express purpose of being able to charge people who have responded to their "free" trial offers (in my case, I received nothing but a "dowloading error" message each time I attempted to download anything--a message that did not even scroll, so all you saw was "downloadi..."--logical assumption being that your "free" music is downloading). So when you keep attempting to download stuff that never downloads, you go over your "free" limit and get charged, in spite of the fact that nothing has downloaded successfully. Pretty clever, eh?
4. Not nearly as clever, however, as not having any sort of pop-up to warn you that you are about to go over your "free" limit and if you continue an action, you will be charged.
5. Customer service reps are some of the most unresponsive (except when you anger them with your logic) twits on the internet (again, even their Blind Faithful will admit this), and will, under NO circumstances, issue a refund.
6. Complain on emusic message boards and suggest there are better alternatives, and you will be vilified. The Blind Faithful even have specific labels for you, and save their most vitriolic ridicule for those with the most legitimate complaints. I was called every name imaginable, including a vile term used to refer to the mentally challenged (more than once), and told in no uncertain terms, that my inability to use their site was because of my own stupidity. I even had demeaning speculation on my profession, and when I dispersed this with a proclamation of my actual profession, the vituperation quadrupled, with one fine emusicer posting over 20 notices denigrating my profession and those in it.
7. Should you doubt that emucous's business model is designed specifically to rip-off unsuspecting "free" trialers, couple the above observations with the fact that 60% of emusic's income is generated from "inactive" accounts. This fact was posted by a disgruntled former employee whose privileges to post on their message boards was immediately revoked, as was mine when I repeated this fact.

Not being one to complain without offering a solution, if everyone who has experienced a similar problem with these jerks (and to me, one of the most egregious things is that these rip-off artists portray themselves as the ultra-hip heroes and saviours of the poor struggling independent artists and those who enjoy listening to them) would complain to the Attorney General of New York State (where emucous is based), the Attorney General of his or her state (where emucous does business), and the Greater New York BBB, something may get accomplished.

Billing
2 Accounts activated, on same day and time. This after site showed an unable to open an account, no emails regarding activation, no refund, no free trial downloads, lost when account "upgraded". No real service, they just repeat standard diatribe, talked with four "reps". They must be making lots of $ from this. Suggest people do the following:

File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, which has more clout and could end their underhanded practices. If not notified regard billing/ account upgrade, inform them. The company does not notify anyone, even after the fact and pity those who fail to check their bank statements. They are passive ( not informing the consumer because it means lots of $ for them...worldwide.

paypal rip off
I cannot cancel my order for the free trial. They took my paypal data to charge me. This business is a scam. They definitely know the laws on their side.

free trial cancellation
I second the complaints about the "free trial" offers and the lack of customer service. It is impossible to cancel. Be wary of accepting their offer-you will pay in any case.
