wrongful billing practices
I had a brief living situation in which I was possibly able to get dial-up internet service. It was going to be rough using dial-up, but it was better than nothing, so I called earthlink. The gentleman told me that they had a special offer that gave me 1 month free with an option to cancel, or I could continue for 5 more months at 8.99 per month, and then, thereafter, I would pay the regular monthly service charge. Knowing I was to be there for less than a month, I agreed to the free trial, then after I moved, I could perhaps switch to DSL with earthlink and keep my email... well...

The trial ended, I didn't need their continued service and so I did not renew or take them up on their 5 month reduced rate. They said they would cancel my account.

Now, I know it's not best practice, but there is no law that allows any company I have done business with previously, to have withdrawal rights on my account and get away with it if I don't catch them right away. But, this is exactly what Earthlink does. I didn't look closely at my account statements... mainly because I went green and chose to get paperless statements. Needless to say, I don't check my statements as much now except when there is a big problem. 8.99 a month was not big enough to be alarming to me.

Earthlink continued with the additional promotion for the next 5 months, and then they changed my status to full monthly payments of 29.99 per month for the next year and a half. I was livid when I finally discovered it. It took me 2 hours on the live chat link arguing with a lady rep. who kept trying to sell me a better deal... mind you, I don't live there anymore, nor do I own the account that I access the internet on, so I should not be paying for monthly access. I refused and so she told me in that case I was overdue for the last month's payment!!! When I refused to pay, I got a bill for 2 months plus a penalty adding up to 60 some dollars. I decided that my time was worth more than that so I will pay it yet again and be done with it.

I followed their procedures to pay online and when I pressed "submit" I got a message that the transaction failed. I was then redirected to the payment area to start over. I did. This time it worked. I immediately called Earthlink to inform them of this mishap and asked that they insure me that I won't be billed twice and to please cancel services. Eventually, I was assured I wouldn't be charged twice, and that the account was cancelled.

They made me feel relieved that my account was at last free from their greedy suction and I fell for it, until I remembered, they have taken more than 5oo.oo from me due to their own mistake! When I mentioned that, the reply was, "I can't help you with that part, ma'am, " then rattled off my confirmation number.

Months later, I discovered an Earthlink Charge on my other bank account! It was not my account. I looked in the archives of my bank acct. and discovered that they were doing the same thing to my other account and it had been going on for 2.5 years at 9.99 to 21.99 per month. I called to tell them that this one was fraudulent and they kept referring back to my previous case. The rep could not find any record of my checking account number and suggested I call my bank and request a 6-month stop payment. I didn't know that you can't get your bank to just stop paying on accounts even if they are not yours. they just tell you that 6 months is usually enough time to get them to cancel you.

The stop payment was to cost 3o.00 for the service. Infuriated with that, I called Earthlink again (which is not an easy task if you don't have an account with them) and spent the next 1 hour and 20 minutes arguing with a man who did not speak english well and did not help me at all. Finally, he passed me on to another person, and the whole damn routine started over, yet again. He cancelled the account after 1 hour and 20 minutes, which I recorded every minute of, and told me that he could not reimburse any of the nearly 400.00 they have pilfered from my account, but he would put a note on the account stating that I was wrongfully billed.

I am going to post the entire procedure on an audio you tube upload. They took nearly 1K from me for absolutely nothing.

Unauthorized billing
There is too much too print here, But it took them 5 months to get me DSL initially. I moved about six months later to a home on the same block and advised them, they said NO Problem 'I know that we can help you Sir' Two months later after having no phone line we contacted AT&T and got service within a week, But, we had to get a new tel # after having our old one for 10 years. We continue to be charged over $100 per month for service that was supposed to be $49.99 and which we don't even have! Further-more my web mail is a mess all three mail addresses each receive the mail for all of them. And Now, 2 weeks ago, my main web site which they have hosted for 8 years is inoperative and my secondary site has disappeared, I have spent hours No days! talking to people in India, the Dominican Republic and here in the US all without satisfaction. The feedback reports are totally ignored, I get one each time I make a query, I have recently responded with threats and rude remarks thinking someone would contact me. NO WAY! WHAT DO I DO?

I have tried for three months to cancel this service. I have not been able to talk to a human. I think that Earthlink"s customer service is amongst the worst I have ever encountered.

Fraud
On Oct. 7, 2008 I discovered while looking over my Earthlink internet invoice a charge of 742.32 that had been taken from our checking account on Oct. 6th according to the invoice. I was not sure why I had this charge so I called Earthlink right away to find out why. The lady I spoke with told me that I received an email on September 6th stating I should check with my phone company that there may be a charge for the use of this number. I explained to the lady that my computer had not been working properly and had been in and out for repair and that I never saw that email. What had happened was after I got my computer back and was trying to get things reinstalled due to a new hard drive being put inI found that out that my local access number (Glenwood, IA) was being disconnected, so I called Earthlink to get a new number because I couln't find one on the website. The evening I called I explained I to the representative that I losing my local number and needed to know what number my new local number would be. Therepresentative gave me a 1-800 number to use, they never said anything at that time relating to a possible charge to use this number. So now the I talked to on Oct. 7th explains that I was charged .10 a minute to connect using that 800 number and that I was made aware of this and that it isn't Earthlink charging me this it is my phone company. I then asked the lady who I needed to talk to to dispute this, she told me my phone carrier. So on Oct. 8th I called Qwest my phone carrier to question them on this charge. The Qwest representative explained that my phone number was not linked to this 800 number and that the charge was not coming from them. While I am on the phone with her she calls Earthlink and we did a 3 way call to see what we can find out. Basically what we were told was that the charge stood and it was non refundable, but she could refund the 27.90 for my unlimited dial up service. We asked to talk to her supervisor and ended up being hung up on for whatever the reason. Now tell me who in their RIGHT mind would continue using a number that you are being charged .10 a minute to use. My bank is in the process of disputing the payment. After looking further at the invoice...119.07 minutes at .10 a minute is 11.91, so from the looks of it I was charged $6.00 a minute for internet service.

Scammers
I tried Earthlink's wireless service they offered in Philadelphia. After I ordered the service, I had problems not being able to get access to the Internet or it taking FOREVER to load. I called Earthlink about five times about the issue and then canceled my service a few months after not bring able to get online.

Every time I would call to cancel they would keep me on the phone with a customer service rep and ask me to keep trying the service. This happened at least four times. I would call to cancel, they would transfer me to a sales rep and offer me another month of their crappy service. They suggested a modem would correct the issue I was having. They offered to send me the modem for free to try it out. I agreed.

The modem came and so did my credit card bill. It turns out they actually charged me for shipping the modem on my credit card (when they said they wouldn't charge me) and additionally they were charging me for an extra user (the extra user, by the way, had my name). I disputed the charges with Earthlink and they removed them. I was so displeased with their service and mess ups with my bill that I canceled again and returned the modem (unopened and unused) to them. Since then they have sent me bills for the modem stating I owe them for it. I have written the Earthlink several times stating I returned the modem to them. They have now sent my case over to a collection agency. I am concerned that this will affect my credit. And I am refusing to pay this bill since I returned the modem to them.

Earthlink has showed incompetence as an Internet Service Provider, and obviously has some management/billing problems. Their customer service, while friendly, does little to resolve issues and seems meant to prolong the agony of the customer provider relationship.

NEVER EVER AGAIN
Earthlink seemed like a good company at first. I used them for wireless services, in conjunction with cable internet from Time Warner. As mentioned on this site, there phone service was terrible. Working out a minor issue would take at least an hour. I was assured I could keep paying for the wireless after ending my cable service, in order to avoid the $100 fee for canceling before a year. But when I closed my account at Time Warner, I was immediately charged the $100 (no warning). It took 2 hrs. to reverse this, and I could not simply tell them to cancel my account at the end of the year. I was told I had to call back after the contract terminated. But of course, when I called back and inevitably spent another hour on the phone, I found I was charged for the month after my 1-year termination date, and I could only get half of the charge back. WTF! To top it off, I cannot for the life of me get their software off of my laptop, so whenever I enter a URL that doesn't exist, Earthlink's page pops up, with embedded advertisements. Earthlink, tell me how this is not a parasitic ploy to make ad revenue. You are honestly a crooked company.

Scam and cheating
Bottom line: crappy internet service, incompetent customer service, and bogus charges that you are forced to pay if you care about your credit. I had Earthlink DSL and was paying with a credit card connected to my home equity line of credit. When housing prices declined, they lowered my credit limit and essentially cut off the card. I wanted to switch ISP's due to ongoing technical problems with service anyway so I didn't bother calling them. So they rightfully cut off my service when the card no longer worked.

A few months later I got a recorded message saying I needed to update my payment method. I called them to say I wanted to close the account anyway. They said they wanted to charge me for service since the card stopped working until the present time. I argued that I hadn't had any service from them for the past few months, so why should I pay for service I wasn't getting? They agreed to remove SOME of the charges made after they cut off my service. So I ended up paying for at least one month of service that I didn't receive.

I thought that was the end of it but it wasn't. I continued to get recorded calls saying I needed to update my payment method. I called them again to find out that even though I closed the account and paid the agreed upon amount, it was still active and they were continuing to charge me for service I wasn't getting. I explained the situation, told them I wasn't paying them for any more service that I had not received, and closed the account AGAIN.

Even after that I was still getting calls saying I needed to update my payment method. I was so annoyed that I simply ignored the calls.

Then, I started getting calls from a collection agency saying that I owed money for service that I did not receive from Earthlink and also more money because I didn't return the DSL equipment. Both times when I called to close the account, neither representative said ANYTHING about returning the equipment. I explained that I didn't owe them a dime for service and that this was the first thing I heard about returning the equipment. I would have been happy to return the equipment if they'd asked.

I asked if I should call Earthlink again. The collection agency said that all other customers who thought the charges were bogus were only sent back to them if they called Earthlink. She also said that most of the other customers who had been sent into collections by Earthlink complained that Earthlink was horrible to do business with.

So, I ended up paying half of the amount they said I owed just to clear the books and avoid a black mark on my credit rating (which is "excellent" because I pay what I owe).

So, if you give a crap about your credit score, you are more or less forced to pay whatever Earthlink says you owe them no matter how ridiculous the charges which basically amounts to extortion.

wont cancel services
Tried unsucessfully to cancel services and Earthlink kept taking fee for another 6 months. Wont refund money or appologise and they were very rude. Talked to Rose. She was very rude.Talked to her boss also . Basically told me too bad. Didn't offer to resolve problem, just asked for conformation code. They are not trained in India to talk nicely or treat their customers respectfully. Had to change debit card numbers at my bank to resolve this. I will tell anyone and everyone not to deal with Earthlink Internet Server.

Poor telephone service
Telephone Service did not function properly, many calls did not go through. Called their technical service, went to two levels where the fellow said he changed settings that would fix it. Did not fix it at all. Wanted to terminate non functioning service, was told there would be a $149 termination fee. Very difficult to reach customer service rep and technical rep.
