Dillard's Reviews

Mistreatment of employees
I recently was employed at Dillard's. When I was there employees were ugly to each other and were stealing sales b/c we were being threatened with are jobs if we didn't make our SPH. I am glad to say I was not involved in the ugly behavior and stealing of sales, b/c I am not a cutthroat. I saw my manager fired before Christmas, whom I started to grow use too.
The male SM and one female Manager could not stand her. I saw unprofessional and inappropriate behavior being used by employees, like screaming across the store at another employee rudely. I received my schedule for January 09 and I was off on the 6th. Well my ASM who took the place of my manager, left me a note saying that I had to work Tuesday.
I wrote her a note before she told me this I had plans. When I told her this she got pissy with me. I went to talk to her in the office and she was talking about me to two other managers in her pissy attitude tone. I was standing there and I heard everything, she didn't know I was there. I was horrified and I told my SM. He never said anything to me and she never apologized. Later when I was in her office I saw another employee who was to have worked that shift, she was a pet and a 15 year employee who wanted her paid holiday. When employees were there half did not do there job, making it double work for people with good work ethics like me. The reason I was terminated was my absentees 4 weeks in 1 year when I had a 6 week medical leave. I suffer from 4 documented mental Illness and epilepsy that do effect me everyday, they are not curable and I will have to take meds my entire life. Some of these absentees were due from suffering from seizures after being upset and treated ugly at work also tragic events in my family, like death and trying to work and graduate a 4 year University. I didn't want my work to know b/c I felt for sure they would get rid of me and my doctor advised me not to. My previous employer knew this and a discriminative comment was made about people with mental illness. The Asm said she was looking out for her other employers, well why was she not coming to me when she saw me being absent and asking what was wrong. She didn't care, they use you and then get rid of you. Final I asked if I didn't have anymore absentees and didn't miss work, since I still had 2 weeks on my LOM. if I could stay and they said they didn't see how, so they were forcing me out. The SM is a Jerk, The ASM is a weirdo and has no communication skills with employees, RTW ASM only wants things her way and the accessories manager, everyone hates her. I know one thing what employees say about Dillard's is true.

problem returning merchandise
Tried to return a dress that fell apart at the seams during the first wash. I followed the directions on the tag. It said that the dress was machine washable. I had the cut-off tags and the receipt, which indicated that I had purchased the dress only a week or so before. But the Dillard's manager would not listen to me. All she kept saying was "I can't resell that." Really? You think I don't know that? That wasn't the point. I wanted my money back for a garment that should have lasted longer than just one wash. I didn't even get store credit. I've had problems with garments falling apart, shrinking too much in the wash, color fading too much, etc that I've purchased at other stores, such as Wal-Mart and Victoria's Secret, and I have had no problems returning them as long as I had the receipt. So beware, if something happens to an item you buy from Dillard's, you may not be able to return it.

Return Policy
My sister and I purchased about $900 of merchandise from Dillard's the Saturday following Xmas, $300 of which from was purchased from the lingerie department. The following Saturday I returned to the store to return a "yoga outfit" consisting of a top and pants. I was told by the cashier that the top could not be returned because the tag was missing. I did not realize that this would be a problem since the merchandise was recently purchased as evidenced by my sales receipt and only cost $11. I had tried the outfit on at home and assumed that the tag had somehow fallen off of the top. The pants were stilll tagged. I was retuning the merchandise because the fit was very poor. Before returning it I tried on a smaller size in the store and it fit poorly as well so instead of exchanging it I tried to return the outfit. I was told that it could not be returned since the tag was not on it. I spoke to the Assistant Store Manager (Esplanade Mall-Kenner, La., a suburb outside New orleans) and he refused to accept the return of this item and could not have been more indifferent and arrogant about it. All of this over a yoga top THAT COST $11!! Needless to say I will not be shopping a Dillard's again. There are too many great places to shop in the city to have to put up with this kind of attitude and I will certainly spend my money elsewhere.

Awful company
Oh boy, I have a lot to say about Dillard's, I don't even know if I will get it all on here. Where do I start? I work for a Dillard's in Colorado (I will not indicate which one however). The management is terrible! A lot of us call our store manager 'Hitler.' He is a miserable old man that wants to make everyone else miserable too.

And the assistant store manager... she is an upidy little b**ch that looks down on anyone who is not like her. They expect all of their employees to dress extremely nice, but they don't want to pay us enough to buy their clothes. Some of us have bills to pay. Don't get me wrong, they pay isn't as terrible as minimum wage, but we deserve a little more for what we are put through.

All the managers have NO problem putting their employees down and humiliating them in front of customers by telling them what they did wrong. Example: I was in a particular area, and was unable to do a particular thing. I apologized to the customer and another associate helped them. The assistant store manager told me right in front of them 'You don't tell the customer you cant do something!' Um...HELLO! Tell me that, but not in front of customers.

My personal manager: Her employees hate her. I don't think she has a single employee that would be sad if she choked on a piece of candy. She is under some false impression that she has a good management style. LOL! Too funny. She yells at her employees, treats them like crap, puts them down, tries to make them feel stupid if they don't do something perfectly or if they don't know how to do something.

I have even had customers say 'she is kind of a b**ch huh?' Um...YEA!!! And she just cant let go of things. If you piss her off ONE TIME, even if you apologize because you honestly didn't mean to upset her, she will hold it against you. She sure as hell has done it with me. We are all contemplating finding other jobs and just quitting, leaving her screwed.

Dillard's does not believe their employees are honest. Example: There was an issue with a customer. A mis-communication between stores. A co-worker of mine called customer service to have a manager paged. It was nearing the end of the night and we were all tired. She accidentally asked for our department.

She realized her mistake and we laughed about it. Big oops. A manager came and the disgruntled customer was like 'they were both laughing at me...bla bla bla.' When my co-worker tried to tell her what happened, she just yelled at her. Our managers are the most terrible group of people on the face of this earth.

Back to my manager. She will follow us around, and watch us. I think she does this for most of her shift. And if you try to talk to her about it, she will either yell at you or send you home. She is a terrible person, and an even worse manager...but she doesn't want to face that. She thinks she is never wrong and doesn't realize how much her employees hate her.

I read one of the reports, saying that its 'hitler-style' management. That is so true. The only employees that get treated like humans, are the major suck ups and prissies.

I will be writing the local papers about this issue. But I will probably give more detail. Of course consumers want to know how their favorite department store treats their employees. Just like, a lot of people wont buy stuff made in china because of the slave-like sweat factories.

I think we need to put Dillard's either out of business, or in the hole. It is a terrible company, and the store that I work at has to have the worst management team. If you have any further questions for me, please feel free to ask. I would be happy to answer anything.

Flagrant actions of Colege-Station Store Manager
We have become convinced that dealing openly and directly with the facts about this store manager is a matter of urgency for us all. The intellectual difference between right and wrong does not bring on the emotional sirens and flashing blue lights for her that it does for the rest of us. Without the slightest bit of blip of guilt or remorse this person continues to destroy human lives. But not to care at all about the effects of her actions on employees .

Conscience is our omniscient taskmaster, setting the rules for actions and meting out emotional punishments when we break the rules. This person does not have a conscience. The ability to reason or act as a normal human being is beyond anything she has ever shown in College-Station, Texas. We truly believe she has an empty hole in her psyche, where there should be the most evolved of all humanizing function. She is not an ordinary bully. She is a sociopath with the blood lust, and opportunity to destroy with intimidation all of us at Dillard's in College-Station, Texas. She falls into sulky and rageful moods we can not begin to understand. She has ensconce herself in a niche where she has control over a group of people and attempts to ruin employees and simply steamroll over groups who are dependent, helpless and vulnerable. This satisfies her desire for power. Other times she will pursue you with a cold calculating passion that tolerates none of the moral code of conduct associated with being a conscience human being.

problematic return
I purchased a queen comforter and small throw rug approx. 11 days ago; after careful consideration, I decided to return both items. After pulling out my receipt, I told the sales associate that I would like to return the items because I changed my mind. She scanned the POP tag and looked at my receipt- She then proceeded to tell me that I couldn't return the items because they had already been returned. "How is that possible? The items are right here. Please call your manager, " I asked her.
The manager came over and said that it could be done, but we would have to go to customer service. Again, the three employees kept stating that it had been returned yesterday at the Penn Square store (where I originally purchased the items).
At this point I started to feel as if I had done something wrong, and they still did not want to give me cash back ( I had paid by check that had already cleared my bank); they were going to give me a store credit.I told them no way- I want my money back.
Finally, they refunded my $123; the bedding manager did ask me "Are you sure you didn't try to return these things at Penn Square yesterday?" I was appalled! I hadn't even been to the Penn store since my purchase! What was he getting at? Why would I still have the items if I had returned them?
Finally, I collected my cash and told the customer service lady thank you, which I had to say THREE times before she acknowledged me. Also, they didn't give me back my old receipt or my refund receipt - which they have always done!
Needless to say, I felt like I had done something wrong- like I was a criminal. I was just waiting for the police to arrest me as I left the store.
I shop there a lot, but I honestly don't know if I want to go back.

Do not work there
Ok, all you need is a warning to NOT WORK THERE. seriously you don't wanna go thru the things other I, my friends, and other employee's have with this so called company. Here are some reasons...

***They have a very unreasonable "Sales Per Hour"
They pull this sales goal from the air... seriously... If you do not achieve this goal your pay will be cut!!!

3 months from date of employment (NO PAY CUT)
3 months from last review---can result in pay cut of 10%
3 months from last review---can result in pay cut of 10%
Yearly reviews after that or you have already been fired.

** For you to make your sales you have to take sales from other people or your area has to be short staffed.
The thing is, there over staffed, so there is only like 1 to 2 people that will make there sales goal (depending on whats going on). But, if you do manage to get your goal, you can make a raise of up to 10%.

***You can also be terminated for being "tardy" more than 8 times in a 6 month time frame. Tardy is defined as more than 5 minutes late!!

***You are also expected to do tons of markdowns where you have to scan and ticket EACH ITEM. before 12 NOON, You could have over 1, 000. While you are doing markdowns, you are still expected to sell and make your quota.

***You are also expected to open 1 new credit account per week (every 40 hrs worked) . If you don't, you will get in trouble but not fired.

*****You also have to sign an arbitration agreement before you even get hired so that you have to go through Dillard's "mediators" if you choose to seek legal action against the company.*********

*** The policies are always changing...no one really knows whats going on. It's really hard to stay positive when you have no direction. It doesn't seem like the managers really have much training so they are always flustered and avoiding associates

*** You never even allowed to have a weekend off

*** On Sundays, Your not EVEN allowed to have a break, you work 6 hrs straight! They even lock the break room, so you cant get in. Thats Right NO BREAK. AND WITH THAT Monday-Saturday you only have 1 break thats your lunch for only an hour. YEP.

AND ITS STILL OWNED BY THE DILLARDS FAMILY. WHICH ARE VERY RUDE, and try to find things wrong with you and your dept. A lot of people who work for Dillards are unhappy and always talk about leaving.

Dillard's will ALWAYS be hiring BECAUSE most people leave when they FIND OUT HOW this company is ran.
