Bank of America Reviews

Unauthorized charges
In 2004 I was diagnosed with 2 separate but related fatal diseases. Fortunately I did not die and after 45 days in the hospital, spent the next 4 months recovering. During this period I received a demand letter from BofA demanding payment for a credit card account from 1999. I did not recall having a account with them, but since I was bed bound on oxygen at the time I told my wife to go ahead and pay them. Soon after that I became aware of a Identity theft problem amounting to about $20, 000 from 1999 to 2000. I made a police report and included the BofA account. About a year later I received a letter from BofA acknowledging that indeed it was not my account and they would send in a letter that would clear it off my credit record. I sent an email to the BofA fraud dept. requesting that they return the money I sent them in error. They emailed me back saying that they would not return my money and that if I continued to pursue getting it back that they would send it back to the credit reporting agencies as my account. How lovely, they would knowingly send in false information to ruin my credit if I didn't allow them to steal my money. Now there is honesty and integrity for you. I filed a complaint with the federal regulators but never received any reply. Honestly since the amount is so small I will never have any chance of recovering anything unless the bank has a sudden attack of morality.

Theft
This is the last letter I sent to Bank of America. As of Sep. 2, 2008, this is still not resolved.

Re: Checking Account Number 223001139249

Thursday, July 24, 2008

To Whom It May Concern:

Your branch at 4300 St. Andrews Road in Columbia, SC has ignored my letters from December 10, February 12, February 21, February 25, February 27, March 5, March 31, April 13, April 21, April 24, April 28, May 2, May 11, May 26, and June 12.

I am writing to file complaints concerning this branch, Matthew Taft, and Arin Faison. I have been treated poorly as a customer. I have been lied to, called a liar, and have felt threatened. All I have ever requested was to have my account fixed.

I have also already called your corporate office two times this week at (704) 386-5687, and I have not received a call back.

I have already lost my car due to your negligence. I am now in the eviction process. I need my money in order to buy a car to get around, and to pay my landlord so I will not be evicted.

The nightmare called customer support
Bank of America has absolutely no shame. Seems they have removed all power from your friendly branch office and given it to the most incompetent group of immature idiots I have ever run across. Some of their little tricks are to freeze your account under the guise that you have suspicious transactions. They will automatically freeze your account if you have over ten transactions in one day. Imagine beith out for dinner with your boss. You offer to pick up the tab, but you can't. One of the idiots has decided to freeze your account. So you call in to their crack customer support area where you will be abused, laughed at because you are stuck at a restaurant with a frozen credit card or even better, left on hold for over 1/2 hour.

What a prize this Bank is to America.

Excessive overdraft charges
My son has an account with Bank of America. He is new to the Banking business. He thought he had more in the bank than he did. He used his ATM card for a small purchase of $6.89. The following day a purchase of $ 7.66. Atm card no problems right? no he was charged 2 overdraft fees of $35.00 each. My complaint is when does the Bank stop allowing you to overdraw your account? Are they out to collect as many fees as they can? Would they allow you to come into the bank and withdraw money that wasn't there? At what point do they look out for you when you overlook something and put a stop before you incur numerous fees? I also have an account with BOA and have never activated or used ay of my ATM cards because of this reason.I just keep enough money in to keep it open so if I need to cash a check or anything I can But my banking loyalties belong to Wells Fargo even though I bank from afar due to there are no Wells Fargo Banks in they city I live in or close by for that matter. Think twice before trusting BOA as they apparently are looking out for the bottom line not you.

Bad service
WE TRUSTINGLY DEPOSITED A $1, 000 CASHIER CHECK INTO A BANK OF AMERICA's ATM ON 4-24-08. BANK OF AMERICA LOST THE CHECK & WOULD NOT GIVE US THE MONEY. BECAUSE THE MONEY WAS AN AWARD FROM AN ARBITRATION, THE PAYER WOULD NOT HELP US. BRANCH MANAGER, DIANA WELLS, OPERATION SPECIALIST, MECO CLEVELAND, PREMIER BANKING MANAGER, MIKE SUTTON, & MARTHA DOMINGUEZ FROM THE EXECUTIVE OFFICE WERE ALL UNHELPFUL IN RESOLVING THE ISSUE.

Checking account scam
BEWARE OLD CUSTOMER OR NEW CUSTOMER:
Bank Of America is doing what is called a research fee which charges you 20.00 an hour. I just opened an account with BOA which should not be there name they do not represent America. Anyways I put in my payroll check which is from a huge and well known company. I took out half my check than 3 days later I got a decline on my ATM card without any warning. My account was closed out by BOA risk department and a hold was put on my check for 2-15 business days. After calling the risk department and sales associates hanging up on me I finally got information from the branch that stated my company check was being researched for fraud and that is why they closed my account out here is the part that they scam you by...THEY CHARGED MY ACCOUNT 60.00 FOR THAT RESEARCH AND WILL NOT REFUND ME!! BEWARE THEY CAN RESEARCH YOUR ACCOUNT ANYTIME THEY WANT AND CAN CLOSE YOU OUT ANYTIME THEY WANT. DO NOT SIGN THE SIGNATURE CARD THAT IS FOR THE PERSONAL SCHEDULE OF FEES THAT HAS THAT RESEARCH FEE.

Bank of America sending us to the poor house
Bank of America started ripping me off on my credit card approximately one year ago. I was making payments via my online banking (another bank) every 4 weeks, like clockwork. However, apparently my payments eventually got ahead of the "statement" date since the statements are generated every 28 days. Two payments posted to my account on the same month. And every month, thereafter, BOA considered me "late" until I caught this.

by the time I caught up with this (was getting Ebills and no reason to log in a look since I wasn't using the card), BOA decided I was a "credit risk" and raised my interest rate to nearly 40% apr. Yes, you read that right: forty.

Suddenly, my minimum payments were a mortgage payment. However, I continued to pay them. I even decided to use their automatic payment system "bill pay". Again, I suddenly get a statement that shows I am past due, 2 months worth. I call, and find out that they've been applying my payment to a "corporate card" in my name which I have NO access to pay. But none the less, after many many calls, they transfered the money back. But the interest stayed as well as late fees.

Soon after, my payments were up to nearly $500 per month, minimum. I could not make these payments. I called customer service, held for ungodly times to be disconnected by the dept who could help me.

I sent emails via their online banking. I pleaded for someone to help me pay this down!! I didn't want to default on this card.

Finally after several calls, being bounced around, I was transfered to the correct dept. I spent nearly 1/2 hour of my time to give all my financial stats. IT was determined by this gentleman that my payment would be $200/month. It would freeze my account (close it actually). But would lower the interest rate to make it possible to pay this off. He said it would take about a week to process. I had to give him my checking account info and agree to automatic withdrawals from my account. We agreed on the 15th of the month.

A few days later, as agreed to, BOA withdrew $200 from my account. I presumed all was well.. Whew, what a relief to get this finalized...

A week later, I received a call from the BOA collection dept telling me that I was past due. They had received my $200 (thank you very much) but I still owed $700 in fees, etc. be "caught up". I gave the agent the schpeal on the whole plan I set up, etc. He advised that it probably just hadn't made ti to their dept. No love lost afaic.

A week after that, another call. Same thing...I was told, "oh, sorry - we'll note this on the account".

Ok, so it's fixed now, right?

Today, I recieved yet another call. Now, I'm realizing that indeed there is a problem. After several calls to different depts, I was informed that there was no way to fix this problem internally. That "I" have to call the Customer Service Assistance team. But, of course, they aren't in due to the weekend and holidays, etc. This allegedly is the dept who set up my "payment plan".

I am so frustrated. I want to pay this card off. But they simply do not seem to want to let me. First it was because I paid "too soon". Now they just continually give me the runaround when I try to work something out with them.

They claim that none of the departments have access to each's systems and notes. So there is supposedly no way for a dept to check and see if I'm indeed "on a plan". Even though I am obviously on a plan since THEY are taking my money out of my checking account monthly.

My CC limit is $9900. And now thanks to their fees due to THEIR incompetence, I'm over 10k now.

This is just plain abuse of consumer credit. I'm sickened by it.

As a contrast, Discover called me when I went a bit over my limit to see if they could help. I spoke with one person, and viola, I was setup and got it paid down in a few months.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unauthorized debit
Bank of America uses incorrect dates for transactions. Here is the scenerio...on the evening of August 14 I went to bed, knowing that my paycheck from work would be direct deposited at midnight on August 15th. I told my husband that if he was up later that he could go ahead and pay our cell phone bill online when he saw that my paycheck was direct deposited. He kept checking the online account to see when my paycheck was deposited. He finally saw it deposited into my account at 1:45am (Eastern Time). So he then pays our cell phone bill right after he saw that my paycheck had been credited to my account. Well the following day, the 16th of August I noticed an overdraft fee of 35.00. I immediately called the bank to find out why this incorrect fee was posted to my account. The customer service person said that I payed my cell phone bill on the 14th, BEFORE my paycheck was deposited. I told him that my husband stayed up and payed it at 1:45 am right after he saw my paycheck was deposited. I even offered to prove it by taking my cell phone statement into a Bank of America branch to prove that the bill was paid online on the 15th. The customer service rep told me that this would only prove when my cell phone company RECEIVED the payment. He just kept saying over and over that the debit was made on the 14th when in fact it was made on the 15th. I have given up trying to get them to credit the fee back to my account after four emails to customer service and just canned responses received in response to my emails. If anyone is starting a class action lawsuit then I am in!!!

Overdraft fees
How is it that Bank of America can charge overdraft fees to my account when I have not overdrafted? They have charged me 9 overdraft fees this month and not once was I overdrafted.I was in the negative however when they took the first 5 overdrafts out.they credited me back only 4 of those witch was 140.00. the next day they charged me 3 more 105.00 they did credit that back and today 35.00 more out I am still not in the negative.I guess they are trying to figure out how to get all that keep the change money back.I plan on switching banks and do not recomend this bank.
