Bank of America Reviews

money disappearing, excessive fees, without an explanation
Oh, I have a story for you guys...about a month ago..I had direct deposit from my job, so I waited until it cleared, and transferred $120 from a non bank of america atm...I had the funds, it was not pending, believe me I make sure to check these things, a few times..so few days later my account was blocked..no phone call...I was told it was an empty envelope deposit. I told the agent I never use envelopes, since the new machines let you put in cash...she didn't really know what to say..but kept saying it would be cleared by the next day..

I was unsure of why this happened..and didn't know it had to do with that withdrawal..so 2 days later, still blocked called again after looking at my account online the $120 disappeared, and a weird fee was on the checking account, of $180. I didn't know what it was, so I asked the first agent didn't know, the second didn't, the third said it was because the amount wasn't avaliable since it was a non bank of america atm...but the funds were there and NOT PENDING.

I didn't understand this..and no one really knew what the fee was. So, now of course I HAD bills that are taken out monthly during that time, so of course this happened the day the money was taken out...(which would have been there..if this wasn't screwed up) than took out $200 dollar worth of overdraft fees, and money from my savings account, then again recently, and for whatever reason that money was transferred back, and titled "refund". No one seems to want to help out with this..and it does not make any sense to me...since no one truly knew what the fees were..help anyone? I thought about writing a letter, instead of attempting to speak to agents.

Overcharged
Not only does Bank of America provide poor customer service but I recently learned that they have a system in place to ensure the highest penalties possible when a customer goes into overdraft. I feel the biggest problem is the bank holds visa transactions and pends them to clear. They blame this on Visa and the retailer however I feel the bank us ultimately responsible for requiring a hold to be placed.

The problem lies with the way they withdrawal funds from their customers account. A customer may have 5 pending transactions for only a small amount per transaction. If they have a larger transaction that places their account in the negative the bank will withdraw the larger transaction first and then the next highest amount and so forth until all transaction have been taken out, even if the larger transaction was several days after the smaller transactions.

So the argument that is made is the bank is protecting the interest of the consumer because they took out the highest and most important amount first. That is a lie. They take the highest amount first in order to inflict as much monetary damage as possible.

I recommend that either a class action suit is placed together to stop this practice or that consumers encourage congress to pass a bill requesting funds be withdrawn in order that they were taken out by the consumer. It of course would then be the consumers responsibility to take care of any returned check. Also debit transactions would not be a problem because if the funds could not be immediately verified they would not be taken out.

If this has happened to you I recommend voicing your concern with the Bank. Keep records of the call and of any bank emails you may have. File a complaint with the Ripoff Report, the Federal Trade Commission, your Local Better Business Bureau, and most importantly your State Banking Department.

Pressure needs to be put on Bank of America and other banks to help stop consumer abuse.

Unauthorized charges
I have had nothing but trouble with this bank. They will do anything to bill you it seems. My biggest issue is when they decided to take my money in my checking account and start transferring it to a savings account without my permission. And not only that but they continued to do this for about four months even though i constantly told them to stop the transfers and they told me the transfers were stopped. One month they even started transferring more.

So then when my automatic payments for my Star card went through they bounced it saying i didn't have the money and then felt the need to bill me for it, which was on top of my card billing me. Apparently your money is untouchable when they transfer it to a savings account unless they want to bill you for something then they suddenly remember that both accounts are "yours" and attached to each other. I lost about $3, 000 from this fiasco. Not to mention when my card billed me over these few months 500 dollars of debt suddenly became 4, 000.

I will never ever recommend this bank. And now I am afraid to even leave them until i know absolutely everything has been changed over to a new bank account because of when my parents left and a check suddenly went through late they decided to bill them nearly 500 dollars in bills total and even tried to tag on another 200 saying that the company that had turned in the check was billing them, when in fact they were not doing so whatsoever and the bank was just lying to try and get some extra money. And this was all from a 7 dollar item.

My advice never ever use BofA and if you do have them make sure you change banks as soon as you can safely do so.

B.O.A. closed my credit card account
I have had a credit card with Bank of America/MBNA since 1997. And, I have used my credit card account for balance transfers since 1997. Just recently, I was told about a companion card to go along with my current B.O.A. card. I was told by a representative that I could transfer some of my credit available on my current B.O.A. to this new account once I received the new card in the mail in order to take advantage of a 0% balance transfer for 15 months.

I called a few days ago on Monday to see if I was going to get that companion card in the mail and I was told that I had been rejected for the new card. I asked why, and I was told that upon closer review of my currently revolving credit lines and balances with other cards that I was rejected for the new card and that my existing credit available($10, 177.00) would be taken away from my current account and it would be closed even though I currently have a balance of $5, 822.00 at a 1.99% rate until March 2009. And, also, I have never been late or missed a payment the whole time I have had this card since 1997. So, my credit card account has never been a delinquent account. I have very good history with them and they acknowledged that, but they said that was the right decision.

I have made balance transfers with them about every year since 1997 and they have never had a problem with this before. They just processed my most recent balance transfer in July 2008($6, 000.00) at the 1.99% rate until March 2009, and the balance is now down to $5, 822.00 like I said earlier. So, I have shown that I can make my payments every month and I have not missed any payments on my other credit cards and they admitted that I do have a good credit score. So, I asked them why do they have to close my account even though I have a balance, have not missed any payments etc., and they told me that all it takes is for me to miss one payment on one of my credit cards and then all of my credit card interest rates and payments will go up and that means that I will probably eventually not be able to pay them. Well, I have never demonstrated that I would or could miss or make a payment late! I have been with them since 1997! I don't understand this! I have excellent credit and they acknowledged that! This is not fair! They even closed my husband's Bank of America card account too, all in one phone call!

Now, because they have closed mine and my husband's credit card accounts, our credit will be ruined because credit reports will show that they closed our 2 credit card accounts and I still have a balance on one of them! The fact that they(Bank of America) closed our credit card accounts is going to now lower our credit score and cause our other credit card companies to possibly raise our interest rates and our payments and will also, most definitely cause them(other credit card companies) to stop offering us any low rate balance transfer offers! So, in effect, Bank of America is going to cause the very scenario that they were trying to avoid in the first place! By closing my accounts and ruining my credit in the process, they may cause my other credit card interest rates to go up, therefore increasing my minimum payments, and also causing them(other credit card companies) not to offer any low interest balance transfers which will in turn, cause me not to be able to pay off my current balance with them(Bank of America)! I have tried to get them to reverse their decision about closing my credit card account, but they said that they can't and I have spoke with supervisor after supervisor to no avail. They are ruining my credit by closing my accounts!

What can I do? Do they have the right to do this? Do I have any recourse? What can I do about this? Can someone help me?

Thank You So Much,
Shauna

Holding funds
here is the content of a letter I sent to customer service at B of A concerning a "hold" they have on check I deposited a week ago. This is a scam being run by B of A. What they do is withhold deposits for the full legal time they can withhold them to get the advantage of your money for a period of time. Meanwhile, you can't pay the bills. The spirit of the law is to protect from phony deposits from disreputable sources. I can only say that the source of this deposit is in better shape than BofA-and BofA knows it.

I would ask you to immediately release the rest of the funds from a deposit I made a week ago. The check was from a a major insurance company, as reputable a source as any. (if the source was suspect I would possibly understand). The only possible justification for holding back the money-which is causing us huge problems-is that Bank of America is stealing-holding the money hostage so they can use it for the full legal time they are allowed to do so. If done on a massive scale this could benefit the company, at the expense of the deposit holders. This is disgraceful behavior. I know you have stated you will release it Monday. Release it today.

fraud and erroneous overdraft fees
Charging overdraft fees when they have already subtracted the money from your account for thepayment of the bill and many other problems that I have copies of from on-line banking where they are stealing my money. Very rude and nasty people when you call for an explanation.

Over Draft Charges
Yesterday we were notified online that we were in an overdraft status. We immedately add enough cash to cancel charges. Last night a direct deposit was added, giving us an even greated balance. Everything was fine this morning and a couple more items were added with no problems.
After 2 pm we were notifies that we were again iin over draft status. The strange part is items appearing yesterday as pending and having already beed deducted from our account. suddenly reappears today as beiing deducted from our accound again. We tried to point this out to the bank rep. that they have deducted the same charges times 2. all she can tell me is that there's nothing she can do and that the charges will stay in place. So now not only am I complaining here but we are also changing banks. We've been with Bank of America for 20 years and often have found and reported these same practices before. It is my belief that over those 20 years they have probably erroneously taken several thousands of dollars from us.
I'm a retired nurse trying to live on SS and this bank wants to eat me alive. I may be small time to them but their not the only bank in town.
A few years ago they had to pay a large fine but it was small potatoes to us. And now it appears that their doing the same thing again. An ybody want to start a classaction suit, lol.

Bait and switch fraud
This mega bank is playing bait and switch with CD rates.

We asked to move a CD to the interest rate that was advertised on their web-site, when the CD matured and I was assured by their Customer Service dept. over the phone, that would be done, twice!

But, after it was too late to move the CD, as it had passed it's 10 day 'grace' period, up comes a response on their obscure customer service page that "Sorry, that can't be done".

Bad customer service
It was not a first time within 2008 year I went to same office to get services. Each time waiting time for financial service person stretches longer and longer, even you call them ahead. They never consider your work leave as their responsibility. They never suggest for how long your waiting time would be. Today my waiting time was 1, 5 hrs. Before I got to a bank clerk just to switch my CD to next period. I had it enough, will never return back.

Also, they have other problems in their system which lowers customer interests and profits Bank. To fix them, you physically have to go to the office and here it is again...waiting, waiting, for their system mistakes.

Do not recommend working people to have business with Bank of America!
