Poor training
I have Legal Nurse Consultant working full-time in the field for several years. I did not take a formal course. I am a BSN-RN and completed a paralegal certificate course prior to becoming a nurse. The firm that I work with exclusively contracted with a number of Milazzo trained nurses 2 years ago. Only of the group is still working with us. The rest have been let go because they all failed to adquately grasp the concept of causation. Each struggled to understand that a malpractice case can only be built when negligence is coupled with causation and damages. Further, these nurses had a tendency to pursue theories of liability that were a stretch, to say the least. We ended up spending a great deal of money on obtaining expert opinions on cases which held no merit, and should have been evaluated as such on early nursing review. My firm now has a policy of not contracting with Milazzo trained nurses. I think that anyone contemplating this course should first investigate whether a lower cost program is available through a local community college.
