Fabulous Dogs
I have owned Akita's for over 20 years. My female from Royalty Akitas, Meisha, has been the absolute best akita I have ever had. She has the sweetest temperament and disposition, although she is still skittish of strangers she is loyal and loves our family. If your not familiar with there personalities you need to research their breed. Akitas are different but wonderful..Don is amazing with his dogs. I am in the process of getting a male and Don has been so patient with me and he is finding the best possible match for Meisha. I can't wait to get my male!!!!!!!!!! Royalty Akitas has proved to me they are outstanding....Christy Compton

Puppy Mill
No pedigrees, no OFA, 20+ dogs. Use your brain. What do you think he's going to produce?

Nothing But Positive!
We live on a ranch in Northern California and have had 9 Akitas over the years. We are very happy with the dogs that we have purchased from Don. His facility is clean with plenty of room for the dogs to grow and feel loved. Don treats them like family and puts the needs of the dogs first. His dogs are healthy with a wonderful temperament. I have nothing but positive things to say about Royalty Akitas and Don Van Dermyden. Andrea - Chico, CA

Just the right puppy!
After the passing of our border collie Molly we decided that it was time for another Akita. My husband and I had had an Akita some 20 years ago and he was such a wonderful dog that we were a little nervous that no other Akita could measure up. After much research and phone calls and endless pictures, we decided that Don was the best fit. He really listened to what we wanted and why we wanted an Akita. Don made sure to pick the puppy that best fit us. And Dude is a wonderful dog, now 14 months old he is the sweetest dog. We get stopped all the time on walks by people just wanting to tell us how beautiful he is! We were so pleased with our puppy that in June we got Dude a play mate, Lucy is a great addition to our family. The two of them play endlessly. It was great to just be able to call Don and tell him what we were looking for in our new puppy and have him fit the puppy not only to us but also to Dude. Don has a wonderful place out in the country with lots of room, everything is clean and well kept. Don truly loves his dogs and it shows. Susie and Russell Case

Excellent Breeder
15 and then again 12 years ago my husband and I purchased a female Akita and both ended up dying young due to genetic problems. We were scared off Akitas for a while but have always loved the breed. Last year we decided to try again. After much research and conversations with breeders all over, we decided on Don Van Dermyden and Royalty Akitas. We feel that with Don we hit the jackpot! It took us some time to settle on the girl we wanted and through it all Don was dedicated to making sure we were getting exactly the puppy we wanted. Once we picked her out Don kept us up to date with her progress through pictures, emails and phone calls. Throughout this process, I was able to hear and see first hand the love and care Don gives each and everyone of his dogs. He is dedicated to breeding and raising top notch, beautiful, smart, well-adjusted and extremely healthy Akitas. We have been so happy with our girl, who is now a year old, that two months ago we purchased a male and he is truly gorgeous in every sense! Both dogs are incredibly loving and good natured as well as stunning. Even my three teenagers exclaim, "Don sure knows what he's doing with Akitas!" With Don you also received continued support in that he is always available to answer questions and he has promised me during-the-process support when we have our own litter. For anyone considering an Akita, we highly, highly recommend Don Van Dermyden and Royalty Akitas. Without a doubt, if there was something wrong with one of his puppies, and it was genetic, he would take care of it without hesitation. To Vikki, I am sorry for your loss but if the cause is not proven to be genetic you have no business discrediting the breeder of such fantastic dogs. There is no way I could even conceive of his business being considered a "puppy mill", it is so far removed from that description (and you can see for yourself) that it is embarrassing to hear it said as well as undeserved! Royalty Akitas is Don's business as well as his passion and he takes it seriously! Royalty Akitas are in demand because Don and his staff breed outstanding Akitas! Thank you Don! Top notch breeder
Don Van Dermyden is a reputable breeder that can be trusted and sells beautiful and loyal Akitas. With regards to Vikki's post, I'm sorry for your loss....we also had to put down our loyal Akita, Rocky in May of 2010. It was the hardest thing we ever had to do so I feel your pain. We were advised by our vet that it would best for our children if we'd start soon to find a puppy to help them deal with the loss of Rocky. Rocky was a VERY loyal Akita to our family and very protective of our children....even so that he pulled our oldest off the bus by her backpack when she was in kindergarten because the driver brought a different bus. The breeder that we purchased Rocky from is no longer in business so we searched many many sites to find a breeder that we felt was reputable and had a good background. We came across Don's facility on Puppy Finder and contacted him regarding a litter that was to be born within a few days. Don was so wonderful to work with and he was in constant contact with us after the puppies were born and helped us pick the best puppy via e-mailed pictures and phone calls. After choosing Bear, Don kept in constant contact with us weekly to keep us posted on his growth. Bear made the trip from CA to Ohio last August and when we opened up his kennel we could tell that he was definitely a well bred dog and a very loved and cared for puppy while in Don's care. I'm sorry that you had a misfortune with your puppy. I have to disagree with you that Don runs an upscale puppy mill....your pet stores run those. Believe me I have a friend that purchased an Akita at a puppy store for MORE than Don charges. That puppy did NOT look like an Akita.....within less than a year this dog had to be put down because it had become so aggressive. Don runs a great opeartion and what does his business and his awesome dogs have to do with anything about where he lives? I would and HAVE given Don's name and number to so many people when they see Bear and ask what type of dog he is! We trust Don and Don still keeps in touch with us to see how Bear is doing and also advised us to change foods for Bear because the previous kind was not to his satisfaction. WE have done everything that Don has suggested us to do to keep Bear healthy and happy! Don and his staff are great to work with!! We are impressed with his quality of dogs he produces, his ethics on breeding and selling. Don keep up the GREAT work.....WE LOVE BEAR!!! You need to continue to breed those wonderful and loving Akitas!! You are awesome!!! At Vikki....just be happy he offered to sell another puppy to you for half price......but you'd probably complain if you were hung with a new rope. :)

Great Breeder
I have been a Akita owner for over twenty five years and four years ago I lost my male at a age of 13.I live in Arizona and we made many trips to visit Breeders in several locations and after a long year of looking for a great pup to replace my boy Rocko we made a trip to Northern Ca. to visit Don at Royalty Akitas.I have to say it was the best trip I ever made because I found my great new boy Austin at he has been a great healthy, smart beautiful boy that has been with us for three years now.Don was great to deal with from the minute we arrived at his place and continues to be that way.His dogs are loved very much by Don and the care he gives them is second to none and the dogs love Don like I have never seen before at any other breeder that we visited.Since we purchased are first boy we also purchased a beautiful girl last year and Don Shipped her to us and she is everything Don said she was.We have sent at least 4 or 5 of our friends to Don and everyone has been very pleased with there puppies and the way Don handles matters,he always has been very easy to contact and whats to know how his Kids are doing. Don keep up the great work you do with your Akitas because you really have a passion for want you do. Regards Joe and Tina Joe Dugger

Just the facts
If anyone is interested in the FACTS regarding this issue please contact me at [email protected] as we have Nothing to hide and provide a link directly to our vet clinic. As of this issue, the paperwork provided via Vikki's veterinary, showed NO conclusive evidence as to the cause of the puppy's hip problem. I will gladly discuss this dispute with anyone who is interested in the facts before drawing any one-sided conclusions. Thank You Don Van Dermyden

Upscale Puppy Mill
I purchased a dog from Don Van Dermyden of Royalty Akitas ( or Royaltyakitas on Don’s business cards) on 4/4/09 and I put that same dog to sleep on 8/19/10 because she tore BOTH back leg ACL and needed TPLO surgery at a cost of $10, 000 for both legs (I live near San Francisco, California were everything is expensive). My Dog was only a year and a half when I put her to sleep and I probably spent around $4, 000 between buying her, vet costs, getting custom made braces for both her back legs from OrthoPets. Please know that this was my 4th Akita over a 20 year period. The female was very sweet, but, ended up being abnormally large, she was 100 lbs by 11 months old. I took her off puppy food early and fed her IAMS food but less than I had fed my past akitas due to her size. . The surgical specialist who confirmed it was a torn ACL indicated this is NOT common for a dog that was 15 months old, Usually you see tears in dogs age 5 and up. I’m posting this because I think potential Akita buyers should be aware that Don Dermyden’s Akitas can be very LARGE and this increases the risk of leg problems. I contacted Don very upset about this and he hinted it was my fault based on what I fed my dog and offered to SELL me another dog at half price. A good breeder would have offered to replace the dog for FREE, but, Don Dermyden is all about making money. Don asked for all my vet information, which I emailed him including pictures, but, I never heard from him again, not even to say, “Sorry about your loss.” He runs a very clean, upscale puppy mill in my opinion and I regret supporting this over breeding practice. Don does construction work, so, his place looks great. I put a review on Puppy Finder explaining that I had to put my dog down and Puppy Finder removed it less than 12 hrs later. I sent Puppy Finder paperwork at their request proving I purchased the dog, my vet records, and emails I had sent to Don, but, they would not reactivate the review. And after looking up Puppy Finder complaints online, it appears they remove most or all negative complaints because Puppy Finder makes money from the breeders. The ironic part of this is I explained to Don, when I first contacted him, in February of 2009 that I spent about $6, 000 fixing my second akitas back legs for medial/patella luxation and I didn’t want to go through that again. Impressed by his clean facility and because Don stressed the good health of his dogs, that is why I purchased a puppy from him. He’s a good sales man who lived on ten acres in California when I got my dog and now he has moved to 20 acres in California… one of the most expensive states…. Hmmm. Over the past 7 months I’ve noticed Don has a new litter EVERY MONTH sometimes TWO litters in a month on Puppy Finder. I didn’t realize he bred that much. At $1, 200 to $1, 600 a dog, and if an average litter size is 5 to 8 dogs… that is a lot of money in one year. Don Van Dermyden of Royalty Akitas is over breeding and I hope people reconsider supporting this behavior.
