MTA EMPLOYEE MAKES AN ALARMING COMMENT ABOUT BEING RAPED
Hello,
I am currently on a train heading out of grand central to Poughkeepsie and I just had a shocking and disturbing comment made to me from an MTA employee, a Metro North Train Conductor.
Myself and another women had a door opened from us from a metro north employee. A few minutes later, a MTA employee came in and said to myself and another employee “I don’t know how you two got on here, but if there was a man on here and you were raped, it would be your own fault because we were trespassing” .( Mean while, a mta employee clearly opened the door for us with a key)
This comment, from an MTA Female employee reveals a disturbing attitude that is present amongst this government ran department. It is shocking to me, that a government employee, would lay blame for being raped on a women. And, in her own words it would be her own fault! The city is responsible to train their employees to counteract this “blame culture” that exists and this type of ignorance that exist
Just to keep in mind:
According to www.nycagainstrape.org,
In New York City, one study found approximately one in four young women aged 14 to 23 experienced an unwanted sexual experience in the past year (Rickert, Wiemann et al. 2004).
According to www.rainn.org,
1 out of every 6 American women have been the victims of an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime (14.8% completed rape; 2.8% attempted rape).
Every 2 minutes, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted. Here's the math. According to the U.S. Department of Justice's National Crime Victimization Survey — the country's largest and most reliable crime study — there were 272, 350 sexual assaults in 2006 (These figures do not include victims 12 years old or younger.) There are 525, 600 minutes in a non-leap year. That makes 31, 536, 000 seconds/year. So, 31, 536, 00 divided by 272, 350 comes out to 1 sexual assault every 116 seconds, or about 1 every 2 minutes.
Rape is an appalling crime and has devastating effect on a victim and those close to the, Nobody asks to be raped and it is never their “fault”. I am insulted and appalled that a city employee is not aware and sensitive to this topic. The MTA needs to think about the training and education their employees should have.

Please post so some type of awareness can be had
Sincerely,
Marykate Gillen
