Unethical Behavior
My friend and I wanted to buy iphones yesterday at a telecommunications company in Taiwan called Aurora, which seemed like a company with a good reputation. As we approached the service counter, the clerk started the conversation with: NO! No! English! Using hand signs we kindly asked her to phone the service center in order for us to speak to an English consultant to explain what we wanted to buy. She started screaming and shouting at the top of her voice (in Chinese): This is Taiwan!!! Speak Chinese!! This place is for Chinese people only! We wanted to write down her name, so we tried to take an old newspaper that was lying on the counter, she covered her name tag, grabbed the newspaper and started hitting the table with it, while still shouting: This is Taiwan!! Speak Chinese!! We were in shock to say the least. When another customer entered, she ordered us to leave the store at once. After reporting the woman's bad behavior, the company's English representative contacted me, claiming that the reason why she acted like this was because we wanted to "destroy the posters in the store". We are stunned! Clearly the woman is mentally unstable, but Aurora is sticking with the clerk. I've asked them to watch the surveilance tapes, but they didn't seem keen to do that either! So, a little piece of advice to any foreign person travelling in Taiwan - Steer clear of any Aurora store, even though they promise "excellent service you can rely on".
